0.15m students study in public, 0.17m in private varsities: UGC

RANGPUR, April 4 (BSS): Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Nazrul Islam Saturday said the number of students studying in 32 public universities in the country is 0.15 million (1.5 lakh) while 0.17 million (1.7 lakh) students are studying in 54 private universities.
There were only six public universities in the country before the independence and the number has so far rose to 32 and the government has been continuing to set up 28 more public universities under a 20-year plan, he added.
Besides, hundreds of students have been pursuing higher studies in 1,708 colleges under the national University and Open University throughout the country, he said.
The UGC chairman also said that 20 more applications are pending for setting up 20 private universities and disposal of the applications will be possible after passing bills in these connections in future.
He said this while addressing as the special guest the launching of academic activities of the newly established Rangpur University at Rangpur Zila Parishad auditorium.
Prof Nazrul said that the RDRS University at Rangpur would get approval just after passing a bill in parliament in this connection as the university has all necessary infrastructures, teachers and relevant facilities for a long time.
