0.15m tonnes sugar remain unsold

Some 0.15 million tonnes of sugar remain unsold in the country's 15 state-run sugar mills, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu told Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Tuesday, reports UNB.
"The amount of unsold sugar was 145,257 tonnes in government-regulated 15 sugar mills as of January 9," the minister said replying to a starred question from Tahjeeb Alam Siddique (Jhenidah-2).
In reply to another starred question from Amina Begum (Women Seat-34), Mr Amu said some 0.20 million sugarcane cultivators under the 15 mills have been receiving SMS in their cellphones about their 'Purji' (official purchase offer) every harvest season since 2010-11 fiscal year.
Responding to yet another starred question from Shubid Ali Bhuiyan (Comilla-1), Mr Amu said construction of Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Savar Tannery Estate will be completed by June 30 this year.
