0.5m marooned as flood worsens in Brahmaputra basin

The flood situation deteriorated further almost everywhere in the Brahmaputra basin in the last 24 hours till ending at 6am on Sunday with possibilities of improvement within the next one or two days, officials said. Official sources at Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water levels of the major rivers marked rise at most places at comparatively reduced rate on Saturday than the previous day predicting possibility of improvement of the situation in the next 24 hours. The rivers were flowing above the danger mark (DM) at nine points marooning over 0.5 million (five lakh) people living in the low-lying char areas of Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj districts anew so far in the Brahmaputra basin. According to the BWDB sources, Jamuna River marked further rises by 15cm at Bahadurabad, 10cm at Sariakandi and 9cm at Sirajganj and was flowing above its DM by 61cm, 71cm and 70cm respectively at these points in the morning, according to a news agency.
