Around 637,500 adult female aged over 15 smoke tobacco in Bangladesh, according to Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), reports UNB.
Some 19125,000 adult males aged over 15 smoke tobacco, the study says.
GATS' statistics says more than 43 per cent ((41300,000)) of adults aged above 15 years somehow use tobacco in the country. Some 26 per cent of adult men and 28 per cent adult of women use chewable tobacco, Zarda, Gul etc.
The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO) jointly conducted the GATS in 2009 as a household survey of persons aged above 15 years in collaboration with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the National Institute of Population Research and Training. The survey was conducted on nearly 10,000 adults. The survey says that some 63 per cent of adult workers (11500,000) are exposed to tobacco smoke at the workplaces. However, 7 in 10 current smokers said they were thinking about quitting smoking. Another study of the WHO styled Impact of Tobacco-related illness in Bangladesh-2007, says over 57,000 people die and 382,000 others receive disabilities from tobacco related diseases each year in the country.
The study says 16 per cent of all deaths among people aged above 30 years are attributable to tobacco use, while there are about 1.2 million cases of tobacco-attributable illnesses each year in Bangladesh. Some 42 per cent of youth aged between 13 and 15 years are exposed to secondhand smoke in public places and 35 per cent of youth are exposed to secondhand smoke at home.
Children under five living in a smoking household are more likely to be severely malnourished than children who live in smoke-free homes. Approximately 52 per cent of all adults aged above 30 years use some form of tobacco. Of them males are 62 per cent whereas females are 41 per cent.
