1 killed, 10 missing in Shitalakhya trawler capsize

One person was killed and 10 others went missing as a passenger-packed trawler capsized in Shitalaksya River in Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Lemon Hossain, 22, operator of Pran-RFL Group and son of Kajol Mia, a resident of Dholasadukha of Kaliganj. Identity of the missing could not be known immediately. Locals said the accident occurred in the morning near Jamalpur area. Police and witnesses said the accident took place when the trawler with 50 passengers on board, most of them workers of “Pran-RFL Group” was heading towards Palash upazila of Narsingdi district from Jamalpur Ghat in Gazipur around 8:00am. The workers were going to Palash upazila to join their workplace in “Pran Industrial Park” in Bagpara area. Locals said most passengers swam to safety but some were believed missing. Police, rescuers and witnesses said about thirty-nine of the passengers managed to swim ashore while 10 others went missing. The missing passengers could not be traced out as of writing this report at 12:10pm. The body of Lemon was recovered from Shitalakhya river at 11:50 am. Divers and local people were still continuing rescue operation. Officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station Najmul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the incident, according to UNB.
