1 killed, 8 injured in Lakshmipur \\\'shootout\\\'

A man was killed and and eight other people, including six policemen, were injured in a “shootout” between a gang of robbers and police at Balaispur under Lakshmipur Sadar upazila on Monday night. Police identified the deceased as Jasim while two of the injured were identified as Sumon alias Belgium Sumon and Delwar Hossain. The injured police officials could not be identified yet. Police claimed that the deceased was the ring leader of a notorious robbers’ gang locally-known as Jasim Bahini while the two injured persons were his cohorts. Being tipped-off, police conducted a drive at Balaispur on Monday night. Sensing the presence of police, members of the robbers’ gang opened fire on the law enforcers. Police also opened firing to defend themselves, triggering a ‘shootout’ around 11:00pm. Jasim and two of his accomplices received bullets injuries while six police officials were also injured during the ‘gun battle’. Later, police rescued the injured and took them to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital where Jasim succumbed to his injuries around midnight. Police said they recovered one US-made pistol, one LG and two rounds of bullet from the spot, according to a news agency.
