Sunday, 9 March 2014

A 'turf war' between residents of two villages at Madaripur’s Kalkini Upazila has left one dead, police say. At least 15 others were injured in the clashes on Saturday evening at ‘Dakshin Akalborish’ village under the Banshgarni Union. Police say the former Banshgarhi union chairman Salam Talukdar and present Union Parishad member Abul Bepari have been involved in a bitter tussle to control the locality. “The clashes on Saturday started when Talukder’s men allegedly attacked Bepari’s house. The two groups fought with sharp weapons for nearly two hours,” said Khaserhat police outpost Sub-Inspector Abbas Uddin. Police later intervened and controlled the situation. The injured were sent to Shariatpur hospital and Dhaka Medical College. Kalkini police station OC Nazmul Huda said Talukder’s younger brother Shahjahan Talukdar, 44, died, while being taken to Dhaka. No case has been filed over the clashes until Sunday, according to bdnews24.com.
