A man was shot and injured in a series of clashes in Chhotohatia Haji Laxmi Bibi Madrasa polling centre at Satkania upazila in Chittagong on Sunday. The clashes took place between supporters of two chairman candidates during the 4th phase of upazila (UZ) polls. The bloody clashes compelled authorities to suspend voting in a polling station for what the Election Commission sought security from the military. Police, election officials and witnesses said at least 150 miscreants snatched ballots from Chhotohatia Haji Laxmi Bibi Madrasa centre around 10:30am. Presiding Officer Belal Mohammad Chowdhury said “The miscreants fired several shots aiming at the law enforcers leaving one person shot and injured at the spot.” However, identity of the injured man, aged around 28, could not be known immediately. Nayek Jyotirmoy Chakma, in-charge of Chhotohatia Haji Laxmi Bibi Madrasa centre, said the law enforcers did not fire back due to insecurity. “We were only three policemen and some Ansar members without arms,” he said, according to a news agency.
