1 shot dead in Sundarbans

A man was shot dead and two others were injured by pirates in the Sundarbans under Koyra upazila in Khulna district on Tuesday afternoon. The dead is Abdul Hamid Gazi, 48, son of late Amir Ali Gazi of Chhota Aungtihara village in the upazila. He was a honey collector, police and locals said. Police and witnesses said Hamid along with four others was going to the Sundarbans through the Baklu River by a trawler to collect honey. As they reached the Apangali canal around 3pm, a gang of pirates called them which they ignored. Angered, the pirates opened fire on them, leaving Hamid dead on the spot and Rejazul Islam, 40, and Abdul Mannan, 38, injured. The injured were admitted to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex in Satkhira district while the body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said the officer-in-charge of Koyra Police Station, according to UNB.
