1 to die, 6 get life for murder in Dhamrai

A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced a man to death and 6 others to life term imprisonment for killing a man in Dhamrai Upazila in 2012 in a clash related to a dispute over union parishad poll. The condemned convict is Abdur Rashid of Char Chouhat village of Dhamrai. He was tried in absentia. The lifers are – Rafiqul Hasan Moksed, the incumbent chairman of Chouhat Union Parishad, Biplob, Siddiqur Rahman, Manir, Asaduzzaman Asad and Rajon. Of them, Biplob and Rajon were tried in absentia. The court also fined the lifers Tk 20,000 each, in default, to suffer 1 year more RI. Sources at Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 said, Abdur Rashid and Rafiqul Islam Moksed along with their supporters attacked their rival Nazrul Islam’s supporters on March 3, 2012, leaving four, including Nazmul Huda Pannu, injured. Among the injured, Pannu died at a Savar hospital the same day, according to a news agency.
