10-15pc more than normal rains in north-east, central regions likely this month

Wednesday, 4 July 2007

The country may experience 10 to 15 per cent higher than normal rains and normal flooding in the north-eastern and central regions during the second half of this month, a long-range forecast by the Met Office for July said Tuesday, reports BSS.
The forecast came at the end of a meeting of a committee of experts at the Met Office with its director Samarendra Karmaker in the chair.
The experts prepared the monthly forecast after a review of the last month's weather that showed the country experienced 20.1 per cent more than normal rainfall in June after the monsoon system became active, spreading over Bangladesh by June 10.
The monsoon was buoyed by two seasonal deep depressions, brewing in the Bay of Bengal and moving away towards the eastern coast of India. Two to three more monsoon depressions are likely to be formed in the Bay in July, this month's forecast noted.
Though the country had more than normal showers last month, Barishal division had less than normal rainfall, Khulna division had normal, and other divisions had higher than normal rainfall.
