10 cops hurt in clash with Shibir

At least 10 cops were injured in a clash with Islami Chhatra Shibir activists at Uttar Kathaltali village in Barlekha upazila in Sylhet on Sunday night. Police and locals said the activists of the local unit of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, were holding a meeting at a house at Uttar Kathaltali village around 9:00pm. On information, local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) confined them there and informed police. When a team from Barlekha Police Station rushed to the spot, the Shibir men through loudspeaker of the local mosque announced that a robber gang entered the village. The Shibir men threw brick chips at policemen, leaving 10 cops, including Sub-inspector Qazi Ziauddin, injured. Police brought the situation under control by firing 10 rounds of bullet. Later, police detained five Shibir men –- Abdul Ahad, 22, Delwar, 24, Nizam, 28, Saik, 25, and Shah Alam, 18, — from the spot. Officer-in-charge of Barlekha Police Station Abul Hossain claimed Shibir men gathered there to plan subversive activities in the area, according to UNB.
