
10 go missing as passenger boat sinks in Teesta

KURIGRAM, Oct 06 (UNB): Ten persons went missing when a passenger boat sank in the Teesta River in the Burirhat area under Rajarhat upazila on Sunday noon.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rashedul Haque said the boat from Burirhat sank around 11.00 am due to strong current in the rive while heading towards Sitabkhan.
Krishna Chandra, officer-in-charge of Rajarhat Police Station, said the boat carrying 40 people sank in the river after hitting a portion of an embankment.
Thirty of the passengers managed to swim ashore while the others went missing. Divers of fire service are searching for the missing passengers.
Thousands of people, including relatives of many of those missing, gathered on the river bank.
