10 hurt in clash over tree felling

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two groups of people over cutting an old tree in Madhukhali upazila in Faridpur on Saturday evening. Quoting locals, police said Nur-e-Alam Siddique, officer-in-charge of Madhukhali police station, said when Murad Hossain, president of Eidgah Committee, decided to cut down an old banyan tree for the renovation work of the Eidgah at Ghopghat village, Akram Hossain, a villager, protested it and sent letters to the deputy commissioner and the forest department for saving the old tree. On Saturday afternoon, when Murad Hossain along with his men went to the village to cut down theĀ  tree Akram along with some local people obstructed them. Following a heated exchange between Akram and Murad, the two groups chased each other. At one stage, Murad group, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked their rivals, leaving 10 people injured. Being informed, police rushed in and brought the situation under control, according to UNB.
