10 including cops hurt in village clash

JHENIDAH, Oct 4: Ten persons including cops were injured in a village clash at Goalpara Bazaar over establishing supremacy in the bazaar area under sadar Upazila Jhenidah Sunday.The Police opened 18 round bullets and fired one round of tear gas shell to bring the situation under control.
The injured are Jhenidah sadar police station SI Sunit Kumar Gayen, ansar commander Shamsul Alam, Ohidul Islam of Goalpara village, Alamgir Hossain of Bhagabannagar, Ali Ahmed of Kashemmpur village and Rustom Ali of Putia village. They were admitted to Jhenidah sadar hospital. At the time three houses and one business establishment were vandalized.
Jhenidah Superintendent of Police (SP) Rezaul Karim said, a confliction had been prevailing between Moksed Ali Joarder of Putia village and Lutfor Rahman of Kashimpur village over the ensuing UP election and occupying Goalpara Bazaar. Saturday the loyalists of Lutfor Rahman attacked a rice mill of Habib Joarder of Goalpara Bazaar. After this incident agitation spread among two groups. Police were deployed Saturday night to avert any further clash.
Sunday morning at around 6-00 am the loyalists of Kashimpur village, Narayanpur, and Ghoramara village took the side of Lutfor Rahman in a body. Around 2000 people equipped with dhal, sharki, ramda, brickbats and batons stood face to face at Goalpara Bazar. Police stood between the two groups to disperse the mob. But both the groups got involved in a fierce clash ignoring the police. At the time police opened 18 rounds of bullets and fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob. During the clash Jhenidah sadar police station SI Sunit Kumar Gayen, ansar commander Shamsul Alam and 8 others were injured. Of the injured the condition of Ohidul Islam of Goalpara village is stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
Police arrested three involved in this clash, said OC Sagir Mia of sadar police station.
