Friday, 27 June 2014

At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups of the local unit Awami League (AL) over establishing supremacy in Sreepur upazila of Magura district on Thursday night. Police said Abdul Halim, an AL leader and Goyeshpur union parishad chairman, and Yusuf Ali, a local leader of the ruling party, had been at loggerheads over establishing dominion in the area. As a sequel to the enmity, a chase and counter-chase took place between the supporters of both the groups over the issue. At one stage, the supporters of Abdul Halim swooped on the shops of their rivals Shukkur Molla and Yusuf Ali and looted valuables after vandalising those around 10:00pm. Angered by the incident, the supporters of both groups attacked each other, leaving 10 people injured. The clash spread to Nabagram, Chhabinagar, Chaturia and Masharia villages in the upazila. At least 13 houses were vandalised during the melee. Being informed, police rushed in and brought the situation under control. A case was filed in this connection, according to UNB.
