10 persons convicted for killing Jubo Dol leader

CHITTAGONG, July 21 (UNB): A court of Additional District and Sessions' Judge-2 here Monday sentenced 10 persons, including four brothers to 10 years rigorous imprisonment (RI).

The judge, however, acquitted two of the accused in the case as they died during the trial.

The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more in jail.

The four brothers-Selim Hosssain, Zakir Hossain, Anwar Hossain and Monir Hossain-and Rezaul Karim, Golam Morshed and M Rafique were in the dock, while Forkan Ali, Jalal Ahmed and Saber Ahmed were on the run.

According to the prosecution, Sultan Ahmed his five sons and their supporters attacked Jubo Dol leader Farid Ahmed and hacked him to death as he went to resist them while they were illegally constructing a wall on the land of a widow at Dobapara under Halishahr area of the port city on March 23, 1996.

Later, victim's brother Rafique filed a murder case with local police station.

After a marathon investigation into the case, police submitted a charge sheet on June 30, 1996 against 12 people.

One of the charge-sheeted accused, Sultan Ahmed, died in 2001 in jail, while his elder son, Delwar, in 2005. After examining records and witnesses, additional district and sessions' judge-2 Ekramul Haq Chowdhury handed down the verdict.
