1,000 families bulldozed out of slum

Wednesday, 12 September 2007

A drive to free health-directorate land in Mohakhali from squatters in the so-called "seven-storey slum" area left about 1,000 families homeless Tuesday. The slum people gathered their belongings in a nearby place and took shelter under open skies. Lawyers said the drive was not legal as there is a High Court stay order on slum evictions. bdnews24.com Correspondent Abu Noman Sajib asks why the eviction had started before rehabilitating the slum residents despite the government deciding in principle that rehabilitation would be ensured first. Magistrate Md Nazrul Islam Khan who led the drive says: "That's not our job. The government will look into the issue of rehabilitation."
