1,000 shanties of slum in city gutted, several missing

At least 1,000 shanties were gutted in a devastating fire at the South Begunbari slum in the city's Tejgaon industrial area Saturday evening, reports UNB.Fire-brigade sources said the fire broke out at about 5:45pm in the slum area and soon engulfed the whole slum, burning 1,000 shanties to ashes.
The reason behind the fire and the casualty in the blaze could not be known immediately. But the slum-dwellers claimed that several people, including children, remained missing amid the fire panic. On information, firefighters from 10 units and the headquarters rushed to the spot and doused the flames with the help of locals at about 6:45pm.
The firefighters were conducting the rescue operation unti filing of the report at 8:00pm.
