FE Report
The government would deploy 10,000 law enforcers in the capital to maintain law and order during Sunday's dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the main opposition, the first nationwide shutdown in three years.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner AKM Shahidul Haq said at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the city Friday.
He said police would not resist leaders and activists of the party from holding such programme peacefully. But the police will take stern action if they try to create anarchy by damaging vehicles and set those on fire.
"Security has been stepped up in the city as we'll not accept anything against peace and public safety," the DMP commissioner said, adding the law enforcers to be deployed would start work from 4:00am on the day.
As part of security measures, the strike force would be kept ready at the police control room, special security measures would be taken at the secretariat, and a special team of plain-clothes Detective Branch personnel will also be vigilant on the day.
The areas under DMP will be divided into nine sectors with one deputy commissioner for each sector where a total of 451 picketing teams, 74 striking teams and 135 mobile petrol teams will work for ensuring public security.
Besides, police personnel of the Detective Branch will guard the Bangladesh Secretariat and other key points in plain clothes. Around 20 teams equipped with video and still cameras will be in action throughout the city streets.
Police check posts would be set up at strategic points in the city and several patrol teams would carry out patrolling round the clock.
Mr Haq, however, urged BNP leaders and activists not to bring any processions on the main roads during the shutdown as it would seriously hamper the movement of travelling public.
The DMP commissioner also said that they have prepared a list of suspects who might create panic among the city people by resorting to unwanted incidents on the eve of the strike.
