100,000 babies die of diarrhoea every year in country: Child Specialists

RAJSHAHI, July 15 (BSS): Around 100,000 babies die due to diarrhoea annually as the under-five children are the most vulnerable to the disease that attacks them three to four times every year in Bangladesh.
Several renowned child specialists made the observation while speaking at the divisional launching ceremony of Baby Zinc at the Nanking Durbar Hall in Rajshahi Saturday.
The ACME Laboratories Limited and Dhansiri Media Production House (DMPH) jointly arranged the discussion and ICDDR,B’s Azharul Islam Khan presented the keynote paper describing causes and prevention of diarrhoea.
He described Baby Zinc as a component of Oral Rehydration Saline (ORS) in the treatment of diarrhoea and said: "ORS meets up water content while Baby Zinc tablet simultaneously cures the child's diarrhoea."
Azharul Islam Khan called for giving utmost importance on maintaining the prescribed instruction relating to in-take of tablet and its dosage by the patients.
Rajshahi Medical College Hospital Director Jahangir Hossain Mullik addressed the discussion as the chief guest while Paediatric specialists Shafiur Rahman and AB Siddiqi gave their expert opinions on the issue.
Quoting an ICDDR'B statistics, they said water logging, excessive population, unhygienic environment and unawareness about healthcare are the risk factors for the disease.
Among others, Director (Marketing and Sales) of ACME Laboratories Rafiqul Islam and Head of Strategy of DMPH Shamset Tabrejee also spoke on the occasion.
A large number of physicians and general practitioners from different hospitals and clinics in the metropolis attended the launching ceremony.
