FE Report
Over 100,000 Bangladeshis are expected to leave Dhaka with jobs for Malaysia by next three months, foreign adviser said Friday.
"We have come to know that a further 100,000 Bangladeshis will be able to leave Dhaka with jobs for Malaysia this year," foreign adviser Dr. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury told the FE.
Dr. Chowdhury is also in-charge of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment.
He said the South East Asian country, which is one of the premier destinations for Bangladeshi overseas job seekers, has already emerged as a key source of inward remittances for the country.
The foreign adviser said inflow of inward remittances from Bangladeshis in Malaysia has set a record in the last fiscal as manpower export to the country increased in the recent years.
In 2007-08, Dhaka received a record $92.44 million worth of remittances from over half a million Bangladeshis living and working in Malaysia. The amount was $11.8 million in 2006-07.
According to statistics of the Bangladesh Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, 630,927 people have so far left the country with jobs in Malaysia since 1978.
Of which, over 78,355 Bangladeshis found jobs in the first eight months of the current year (January-August) while a record 273,201 Bangladeshis found jobs in Malaysian in 2007.
"During my recent transit stopover in Kuala Lumpur I have instructed the High Commissioner that apart from increase in remittance workers' welfare must be given priority," Mr. Chowdhury said.
He quoted a senior Malaysian official as saying that embassies of other countries that are sending manpower to Malaysia should follow the example set by Bangladesh High Commission in helping its citizens who are looking for employment and facing problems in Malaysia.
"Our prime concern is now to ensure welfare of the country's over 5.6 million people, living and working abroad," he added.
Foreign adviser said Bangladesh missions abroad have been instructed to protect the interest of the workers who are contributing immensely to the country's economy by sending remittances.
Over 5.6 million Bangladeshis, living and working in over 100 countries, sent home $7.939 billion in fiscal 2007-08 against $5.978 billion in 2006-07.
"We have issued clearance to 618,806 people in the first eight months until August to leave the country with overseas jobs against 500,065 in the same period last year," a senior official in the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment said.
Of total overseas employment in the first eight months, a BMET official said, 117,309 found jobs in Saudi Arabia, 252,030 in the UAE, 76,355 in Malaysia, 34,675 in Oman and 33,244 in Singapore.
