1020 flats to be built for low, middle income people

The government will import 87,500 tonnes of urea fertiliser and 105,000 tonnes of wheat to meet domestic demand, reports UNB.
Under another proposal of the government's cabinet purchase body, 1020 flats will be constructed for low-and middle-income people in F-block of Mohammadpur in the city. These flats will be sold to these groups of people "on hire-purchase basis".
The Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase in a meeting Tuesday approved the proposals.
With Finance Minister AMA Muhith presiding, the meeting approved tender proposals for construction of six multi-storey apartment buildings which will house 360 flats. Each of the buildings will accommodate 60 flats.
According to the approved tender proposals, of the planned fertiliser import, 25,000 tonnes of bagged granular urea will be imported through Mongla port at a cost of Tk 548.7 million with per-ton price at US$ 315.80.
Local firm Satmark Trading will make the bulk import of fertiliser on behalf of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC).
The remaining 62,500 tonnes of bagged prilled urea fertiliser will be imported through Chittagong port by three local firms at a total cost of Tk 1.327 billion. Satmark Trading and Desh Trading will import 25,000 tonnes each while another firm-Hydrocarbon-- will import 12,500 tonnes.
Local firm Somali Traders will import the 105,000 tonnes of wheat on behalf of the food department.
A tonne of wheat will cost US$ 240. The total wheat import will cost Tk 1.75 billion.
