106 children die of dengue this year

Daily fatality count nine, 1,800 more hospitalised

At least 106 children, aged between 0 and 15 years, have died of dengue this year and nine more deaths from the mosquito-borne disease were recorded on Friday.
Of the total dead, 600 were females and 464 males, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data.
Of the new deaths, one was recorded from Dhaka and eight from outside the city.
The total number of fatalities now stands at 1,064, including 675 from Dhaka, showed the DGHS data.
Both the figures of deaths and patients hospitalised are highest in the last 23 years in the country.
Meanwhile, 1,800 more patients were hospitalised, including 504 in Dhaka, till 8:0 am Friday. The total number of dengue cases this year rose to 218,664.
Of them, 86,997 were in Dhaka, according to DGHS daily update.
Dengue incidence becomes high during the rainy season from May to September and amid high temperature in Bangladesh, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The ever-worsening dengue situation has showed no sign of improvement so far.
Furthermore, the health authorities also continued to report a growing number of new cases outside Dhaka.
Of the new figure of hospitalisations, 1,296 were reported from outside Dhaka.
A total of 8,921 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 2,752 were in Dhaka.
Of the total admitted, 208,679 patients made recovery and returned home, including 83,570 in Dhaka, with a 95 per cent recovery rate on average.
Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.
