Thursday, 14 June 2007

Leaders of National Forum of Organisations Working with the Disabled (NFOWD) at a press conference in the city demanded of the government to allocate 10 per cent resources for the disabled in proposed budget for the fiscal 2007-08, reports BSS.
They said the government should give priority to the rights of the disabled to ensure their access to all development activities in the country.
The leaders were addressing a press conference titled `National Budget 2007-08 Expectations and Gains of Disabled' at the auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
The NFOWD in association with ActionAid Bangladesh organised the press conference.
President of NFOWD Khandaker Jahurul Alam, Acting Secretary General M Khalilur Rahman, Convenor Mahbub Kabir and Director Nafisur Rahman addressed the meeting.
Khandaker Jahurul Alam called for allocating disabled allowance at the rate of Tk 300 pm considering the present price hike and increasing the number of beneficiaries to 0.25 million (2.5 lakh).
The government is committed to ensuring primary education for all children by 2015 for achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG). But at present only 4.0 per cent disabled children are getting primary education, he added.
He said the disabled children should be absorbed in the mainstream education for achieving the MDG.
