11 AL leaders acquitted

SHERPUR, Dec 13 (UNB): A court here Wednesday acquitted 11 Awami League (AL) leaders, including former lawmaker Mizanur Rahman Mizan, in an attempt to murder case.
The acquitted leaders also included acting president of Nokla Upazila Awami League Golam Rabbani, former president of Upazila Chhatra League Borhanuddin, Akram Hossain and Abdur Rashid.
According to the prosecution, a gang of miscreants attacked BNP leader and also Upazila unit chairman Mahbub Ali Chowdhury alias Munir Chowdhury and injured him with sharp weapons on September 25, 1997.
Victim's son Rabbenur Chowdhury filed a case with Nokla police station. Later, the police submitted charge sheet against 11 Awami League leaders including former lawmaker Mizanur Rahman.
After examining the witnesses and records Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahmudul Kabir acquitted them as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
BNP leader Mahbub Ali is now in district jail after being arrested by joint forces on charge of corruption.
