11 fishermen missing at Kutubdia deep sea

CHITTAGONG, March 22: Eleven fishermen from Banskhali Upazila in south Chittagong remain missing for six days following an attack on their boat by deep sea pirates in the Kutubdia coast of the Bay of Bengal. Coastguard members of Chittagong Zone have been engaged to search for the missing fishermen but said they are yet to find any trace, leaving the family members of the victims in deep distress and anxiety. Some fishermen who survived the attack and returned to the Banskhali coast apprehended that the victims might have been thrown into the deep sea after assault by armed pirates but not sure whether they were surviving till Monday. A group of armed pirates attacked the fishermen in Gulirdhar Jalpata area of Kutubdia channel in the Bay on March 16 last, local sources said. The pirates led by Abdul Hakim alias Baishya Dakat attacked the boat from three fishing trawlers and took them into the deep sea. Earlier, the fishermen had left the Chanua coast of Banskhali on board the fishing boat FB Babar Daan-2 for fishing in the morning of March 16. The pirates beat them up and seized the boat from the unarmed village fishermen and reportedly threw them in the water, locals said. The fishermen are Shamsul Alam (40), Ahmed Sagir (35), Mosaddeq (35), Amju Meah (37), Monjurul Alam (33), Ahmed Ullah (45), Ansar Ullah (30), Jashim Uddin (28), Sarwar (30), Aman Ullah (32) and Joinal Abedin (25). A local correspondent from Banskhali said quoting coastguard operation officer Lt Col Ahsan Uddin that the coastguard teams have conducted combing operations in the waters of Gulirdhar Jalpata over the last few days but with no positive result.
