A total of 11 makeshift cattle markets will be set up in the city on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Azha, the second largest Muslim festival likely to be held December 9 next, officials at the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) told the FE.
They also said the DCC is planning to set up another makeshift cow market at the city's Khilkhet area and tender invitation is under process.
Apart from makeshift cattle market, city dwellers will also find sacrificial animals at the Gabtoly permanent cattle market.
"We have already approved bids for eight cattle markets and dropping for three re-tender took place Wednesday," Md Khalilur Rahman, a deputy secretary, in-charge-of DCC estate department said Wednesday.
He also said the corporation has taken measures to check any unwanted situation and help smooth running of the cattle markets to be set up in the city for the ensuing Ei-ul-Azha.
As part of the measures, the corporation will deploy mobile teams at each of the cattle markets to check for any trouble making during buying and selling of cattle.
He said the mobile teams would take action against anybody found to take hasil (tax collected from buyers) in excess of the rate fixed by the DCC.
However, the cattle market will start trading three days before the Eid and it will continue until Eid day, DCC officials said.
The DCC approved eight cattle markets are Jhigatala-Hajaribagh ground, Hosseni Dalan Road (from Chankarpool Chou Rasta to Bakshibazar traffic signal, Brothers Union Club field and its adjoining areas at Gopibahg), Meradia Bazar, West part of Taltola Bus Stand, Open space near Agargaon slum area, Outfall area at Golapbagh and Dhupkhola field.
DCC officials said they did not approve three makeshift markets - Armanitola, Uttara Azampur and Rahmatganj field-due to low offers.
Bidders quoted Tk 17 million for Armanitola against Tk 25.3 million in 2007, Tk 3.3 million for Uttara Azampur area against Tk 5.6 million in 2007.
The DCC approved Jhigatala-Hajaribagh ground against quotation of Tk 1.6 million, Hosseni Dalan Road at Tk 4.75 million, Brothers Union Club field at Tk 7.1 million, Meradia Bazar at Tk 2.5 million, Taltota area at Tk 3.3 million, Agargaon area at Tk 1.8 million, Outfall area at Tk 6.3 million and Dhupkhola field at Tk 600,000.
"We expect we will get expected offers for the three makeshift markets and we will approve the highest bidders," Khalilur added.
