11 receive burn injuries in city building fire

At least 11 people sustained burn injuries when a fire broke out in a building at Tejturi Bazar in city's Farmgate area Thursday afternoon, police and fire service sources said.
The injured are -- Shafiul Alam (46), Khalilur Rahman (36), Mahmudul Hasan (38), Jahirul Islam (60), Abdul Latif (70), Masud (25), Motaleb (12), Roni (38), Uzzal (28), Shammi Aktar Jhilik (19) and Rifat Ara Yasmin (19).
All of the injured were admitted to the burn unit of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Among them, the condition of Latif, Motaleb, Khalil and Shafiul were critical, said the doctors. They have sustained 75 to 95 per cent burns which have damaged their windpipes. The other sustained 35 to 25 per cent burns on their bodies. Shammi is a BBA student at World University and Iffat Ara studies Electrical Engineering at Northern University. Their legs were burned in the fire.
Officer in Charge (OC) of Tejgaon Police Station Mazharul Islam told the reporters that the store was at the ground floor of a three-storied building. There's a garment factory above it. But it was not damaged. He said four fire-fighting units rushed to the spot and managed to put out the blaze by 3:30pm.
Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Mamun Mahmud said the fire might have originated from an electric short circuit at the shop.
