Friday, 10 August 2007

SUNDARBANS, Aug 9 (BSS):Eleven young of `Romeos', a rare species of alligators in the Sundarbans, were hatched out at the crocodile reproductive centre in Karamjal in the Sundarbans Monday after a long efforts of the researchers.
The lone crocodile reproductive centre of the country was established in 2002 to preserve and ensure growth of the rare species of alligators in the Sundarbans. The centre also has undertaken measures for preserving alligators both of saline and fresh waters.
The female Romeo, preserved at the centre, laid eggs for the first time in 2006. But, the eggs lacked fecundity as the male Romeos in the centre at that time were not mature enough for reproductive act.
This year, the female Romeo in the centre laid 19 eggs. Of them, 11 have been successfully hatched out and the rest eight got rotten.
