More than 1.1-million individual taxpayers have submitted tax returns online since 09 September 2024 through availing the fast and simplified system.
The number is one-fourth of the returns the revenue board received last year.
They have paid Tk 959 million in taxes, using e-return portal until last Thursday, officials said.
Tax officials expect to receive over 2.0 million tax returns online this year.
Official data show that some 1.6 million taxpayers have been registered with the e-return portal for filing tax returns.
Talking to the FE on Saturday, National Board of Revenue (NBR) chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan said the system has been running smoothly with the improved portals of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and the National Saving Certificates.
"We've not received any major complaints so far on interruption of the system while filing tax returns," he added.
In some cases, such as verification of National Identification Card (NID), the NBR is planning to introduce e-mail verification to avoid any possible interruption to getting access, he added.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC), iBAS++ and Savings Certificates are the major authorities linked with online tax return submission under the NBR. Some tax officials have said a national or central portal is necessary to get smooth access and exchange information rather than linking in a scattered manner.
Efficient interoperability can make the system faster allowing more taxpayers submit online tax returns.
The time for submission of tax returns by individual taxpayers is scheduled to expire on January 31, 2025.
Currently, some taxpayers file tax returns out of more than 10 million TIN (taxpayer identification number) holders.
On September 8, 2024, the NBR resumed an upgraded online tax return system in a bid to facilitate individual taxpayers to submit their tax returns for 2024-25 fiscal year.
The e-filing platform, www.etaxnbr.gov.bd, is available for individual taxpayers to submit their returns, acquire tax acknowledgment certificates and receive tax return certificates.
