12 Jamaat men hurt in clash with police in city

Wednesday, 12 November 2008

At least a dozen Jamaat-Shibir activists were injured in a clash with police as the cops armed with emergency rules prevented them from staging demonstrations in the city's Baitul Mukarram area Tuesday afternoon, reports UNB.
Witnesses said the clash erupted as the police tried to resist the supporters of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir from staging demonstrations on the street in front of the North Gate of the national mosque in protest against the arrest of Jamaat Ameer Moulana Matiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary-General Ali Ahsan M Mujaheed.
Nizami, Mujaheed and senior BNP leader M Saifur Rahman - all three ministers of the immediate-past government were sent to Dhaka Central Jail when they surrendered and sought bail in a special court in the Barapukuria coalmine graft case Monday.
Police said Jamaat and its student associate started gathering in front of the North Gate of the mosque from 3:00pm. They took to the street after Asr prayer.
"When police tried to disperse the unruly protesters, they threw brickbats towards the law-enforcers forcing them to go into action," said a spot account of the troubles.
At one stage of police chase and baton charge, the demonstrators turned back to the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram mosque and took position there.
During the hour-long skirmish, 12 Jamaat and Shibir activists got hurt.
