12kg LPG cylinder price up by Tk 4

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Tuesday increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), with the price of commonly used 12 -kg LPG cylinder has been decided to be sold at Tk 1,459 for January trading under the new value-added tax (VAT) and tax measures, BERC stated.
The price of the 12-kg LPG cylinder has been hiked by Tk 4 from previous Tk 1,455. The previous price was effective for over three and half months since November, 2024.
During a previous decision, the energy regulator had kept the 12-kg LPG cylinder price unchanged at Tk 1,455.
The price for a 12-kg LPG cylinder was at Tk 1,456 for October, 2024 trading and Tk 1,421 for September, 2024 trading.
The new prices came into effect from Tuesday.
The private sector can sell LPG in various cylinder sizes -- 5.5kg, 12.5kg, 15kg, 16kg, 18kg, 20kg, 22kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg and 45kg -- to consumers following proportional pricing as per the new decision in January, according to the BERC price adjustment statement.
The price of LPG supplied through a reticulated system or centralised storage system has been fixed slightly higher at Tk 261.80 per cubic metre from previous Tk 260.80 per cubic metre.
The retail price of autogas, the LPG used in vehicles, has been fixed higher at Tk 67.27 per litre from previous Tk 66.78 per litre.
However, the price of the state-owned LP Gas's LPG remained unchanged at Tk 690 per 12.5-kg cylinder.
The commission has been setting LPG prices for private operators within the first week of every month since April 2021. Sources said that currently around 27 LPG operators are in business, although licences were issued to about 58 companies.
Some 26 operators import about 1.10 million tonnes of LPG from the international market, which accounts for around 98 per cent of the country's total LPG demand, while seven are satellite operators.
About 35 million LPG cylinders are in use across the country's LPG businesses.
The sector employs around 200 road tankers, 5,000 trucks and 21 cargo vessels nationwide.
