13 JU BCL men detained on charge of extortion

The Savar police detained at least 13 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit on Sunday on charge of extortion, sources said.
The detained BCL men were identified as Jwel of Journalism and Media Studies Department, Talha Ahmed of Mathematics Department, Tanvir of Botany Department, Ismail and Jabed Sajal of Economics Department, Rabiul of Urban and Rural Planning Department, Muhit of Statistics Department, Mehedi of Institute of Information and Technology, Rasel Sheikh, ASP of Savar Circle said.
All of them are the residents of Mir Mosarraf Hossain Hall.
Abdur Rahim Jwel, deputy information and research secretary of JU BCL unit went to Sirajganj by a private car on Saturday and while he was returning from Sirajganj a bus of Hanif Paribahan knocked his car. Following the incident Jwel went to the Hanif Paribahan office and demanded compensation from them.
While they refused to provide any compensation Jwel returned to the campus and seized three buses of Hanif Paribahan and vandalised two of those demanding a handsome amount of money, sources said.
Rasel Sheikh ASP of the Savar Circle told the newsmen that the authority of Hanif Paribahan informed them about the incident. After getting the information they rushed to the spot and detained the students form the Dhaka-Aricha Highway. The BCL of JU unit suspended them.
