134th birth anniversary of Bhasani observed

The 134th birth anniversary of veteran politician Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani was observed Friday with due respect.
Popularly known as "Majlum Jananeta", the leader of the downtrodden, Moulana Bhasani, was born on December 12, 1880 and passed away on November 17, 1976.
To mark the day, different organizations, including Bangladesh National Awami Party (NAP Bhasani), Jatiya Gonotantrik League, Moulana Bhasani University of Science and Technology, Bhasani Adarsha Anushilon Parishad-Dhaka, Bhasani Foundation and other organisations chalked out various programmes.
The programmes included placing of wreaths at Bhasani's mazar, discussions, art competitions and recitations. Bhasani Adarsha Anushilon Parishad organised a discussion on the Bhasani's mazar premises in Tangail.
Adviser of the parishad Syed Irfanul Bari spoke as chief guest with Prof Mohammad Hossain in the chair.
Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, born in 1880 in Dhangara in Sirajganj, was the son of Haji Sharafat Ali Khan. He gained immense popularity among peasants.
He was the founder and president of the Pakistan Awami Muslim League which later became Awami League (AL). He also formed a progressive political organisation called National Awami Party (NAP).
Bhasani played a very significant role in the 1969 movement which eventually led to the collapse of the Ayub regime and the release of Bangabandhu and other co-accused of the so-called Agartala conspiracy case, according to a news agency.
