14-party meet condoles Army officers' deaths, condemns opposition role
Sunday, 1 March 2009
Central leaders of the ruling Awami League-led 14-party combine met with Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Saturday expressing deep condolences for the army officers brutally killed at the BDR Headquarters last Wednesday, reports UNB.
Calling for national unity at this crucial hour, the 14-party leaders urged all to face the evolved situation from their respective positions. "The whole nation will now have to be united," the meeting opined.
They observed that "the loss of lives is irreparable for the nation" and said the entire nation expresses solidarity with shock and feelings of the members of the bereaved families and their colleagues.
The leaders offered deep sympathies for the members of the bereaved families.
They thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for tackling the unwarranted situation with patience, firmness and wisdom.
The leaders deplored that in such a situation when all irrespective of party and opinion are supposed to come forward, many questions are raised following the "inaction" of the main opposition party and "silence" of the opposition leader.
They said although leaders of different political parties, including the 14-party combine, went to the scene, none of the main opposition party did show up there.
When people at home and abroad are appreciating the PM and her government for controlling the situation within less than 36 hours of the terrible trouble, "the opposition leader is trying to mislead the people by raising different unwarranted questions".
About the opposition leader's observation for quicker intervention into the incident, the 14-party leaders questioned if she had thought of the fate of wives, children and relatives of the army officers and civilians inside the Headquarters if force would have been applied at that time.
"Could she imagine what would be the extent of casualty if any clash occurred on February 25," they said, adding that at this time all concerned should behave more responsibly.
Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Abdul Jalil, Tofael Ahmed, Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Selim, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dilip Barua, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Huq Inu and Mainuddin Khan Badal were present.
