The government has decided to build about 1,400 overpasses at level crossings across Bangladesh to avert accidents. The announcement came after a meeting of a panel of the parliament on Thursday amid growing number of accidents and deaths at authorised and unauthorised level crossings on railway tracks across the country including Dhaka, Rajshahi and Chittagong cities. ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Railways, said there were around 2,500 level crossings in the country. Of these, 1,400 were under the railways and rest were either under the roads and highways division or the local government division, he said. ‘The railways ministry will construct overpasses at crossings which are under it,’ he added, according to bdnews24.com.
