1,454 domestic fowls culled in Naogaon

NAOGAON, June 13: Some 1,454 domestic fowls were culled in the district town Thursday night following detection of avian influenza. Two separate teams, led by a first class magistrate, searched local houses at Pramanikpara, Mandolpara, Mollahpara and Shibpur area near the BDR camp from 8.0 pm to midnight and culled the birds, the Livestock Office sources in the district said. Earlier, a sample of dead chicken was sent to Joypurhat Animal Disease Laboratory for a test that detected the virus. Later, the test result was sent to Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute situated at Savar for confirmation. The Deputy Commissioner office received a faxed message from the institute Thursday, which said that poultry birds and pigeons in the areas have been affected with the bird flu. Meanwhile, unofficial sources claimed that about 2,000 domestic fowls were culled in the night time drives. — UNB
