149 bhori gold stolen from bank locker in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, June 02: An incident of 149 bhori gold ornaments worth around Tk15 million getting stolen from a locker of Islami Bank's Chawkbazar Branch in Chattogram has come to light.
The incident that occurred presumably on Wednesday last was disclosed on Sunday.
The bank's client, Rokeya Akter Bari, alleged that she had gone to open her locker at the bank's Chawkbazar branch on Wednesday and as per rule she informed it to the locker's in-charge. As the locker was opened, 149 bhoris of gold ornaments were found missing from there.
She informed the matter to the bank manager and Chawkbazar thana.
She claimed that it was a theft and bank officials were involved in the incident.
Rokeya said, "There were 149 bhoris of gold ornaments including bangles, necklaces, neck sets, neck chains, rings, earrings in the locker. After opening the locker, it was seen that there were only 10 to 11 bhoris of gold left. The cost of the lost gold ornaments is about Tk15 million."
"Officials of the bank said that they will investigate the incident. The bank will inform about this a week after investigation," she added.
Dr Riyad Mohammad Marzouk, son of Rokeya, said that bank officials assured them that they have formed an investigation committee to probe the incident and would reveal the exact facts within seven days.
Although no complaint was filed, the incident was verbally reported to the police, he added.
Preferring anonymity, a senior official of Islami Bank said, "Investigation is going on to unearth whether the incident is of theft, or any other happening."
A team of top officials of the bank visited the spot on Sunday.
Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of Islami Bank Chowkbazar Branch Akiz Uddin said, "We are looking into the matter. The customer has the master key, but we don't. We don't have information about any customer's locker storage. I am trying to solve the matter."
Officer-in-Charge of Chawkbazar thana Wali Uddin Akbar said, "There was no CCTV camera in the locker room. We visited the spot and collected primary evidence."
"If the victim files case in this regard, we will investigate and take legal action," he added.
