JOYPURHAT, June 12 (UNB): At least 15 students were injured in a clash between two groups of rival student oraganisations at Joypurhat Government College Thursday over bringing out procession during the class hours.
Following the clash, the authorities closed the college until Saturday.
Police and college sources said Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, a student wing of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, brought out a procession and chanted various slogans on the campus during class hours protesting fee hike for filling in examination forms.
The teachers of the college urged the activists to refrain from chanting slogans during the class hours. At this they became angry and swooped on the teachers, sources said.
The activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Chhatra Samaj, under the banner of all-party student unity, then tried to resist the unruly agitating students that triggered a fierce clash.
Chase and counter chase took place between the rival student organisations leaving 15 injured from both sides. Of the injured, eight were rushed to Sadar Hospital.
Meanwhile, Nayan Sarker, activist of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, came under attack of his rivals when he came to see his injured co-activists at the Sadar Hospital.
