FE REPORT | Tuesday, 9 June 2026

Fifteen police personnel were honoured on Monday with cash rewards, commendation certificates and special service badges for their roles in cracking the widely-discussed rape and murder case of seven-year-old Ramisa in Dhaka, solving a gang rape and murder case in Munshiganj, and preventing a major loss of life in a bus plunge into the Padma River.
The awards were handed over by Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at a ceremony held at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Speaking at the event, the minister said the initiative was aimed at boosting the morale of police personnel and recognising exemplary professional conduct. Similar recognition programmes would be introduced across the country in phases, he added.
Ramisa was raped and murdered in the Pallabi area of Dhaka on May 19. Acting on a case filed by her father the following day, police launched an investigation and first arrested the wife of the prime suspect, Swapna Khatun. Based on information obtained from her and technological analysis, the main accused, Sohel Rana, was arrested from Fatullah in Narayanganj within seven hours.
Sohel later gave a confessional statement before a court. The charge sheet was submitted on May 23, and on July 7 the court sentenced both accused to death.
The investigation was led by SI (Unarmed) Ahiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station. Assistant Commissioner of Police Md Zahid Hossain of Pallabi Zone under the Mirpur Division assisted the investigation, while Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Md Ashraful Islam led the arrest operation.
Other members of the team included Inspector (Unarmed) Mohammad Emdadul Haque, SI Rashedul Islam, ASI Md Zedaur Rahman, ASI Md Rizon Mia, Constable Md Ashraful Alam and Driver Constable Md Arif Mia. Each member received a cash reward of Tk 20,000 and a commendation certificate in recognition of their contribution.
In a separate case, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) officers in Munshiganj were recognised for identifying an unidentified woman's body recovered from the Phuldi River in Gazaria and solving a gang rape and murder case.
The investigation was conducted by SI (Unarmed) Roni Debnath of PBI Munshiganj. Assisting officers SI (Unarmed) Ramprasad Ghosh and SI (Unarmed) Jubayer Hossain were also honoured with cash rewards and commendation certificates.
According to the PBI, the body recovered on May 29 was severely decomposed, making immediate identification impossible. Investigators later established the victim's identity through intelligence-led efforts and launched a full investigation. Four suspects were arrested within 24 hours. The accused later confessed before a court that they had gang-raped and murdered the victim over a dispute involving unpaid money and personal relationships.
Meanwhile, three members of the Naval Police received the "Police Force Exemplary Good Service Badge-2026" for helping avert a major tragedy when a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat in Rajbari on June 5.
