15,000 tonnes of foodgrains to be procured in Sylhet region

SYLHET, June 1: The food department will procure 14,888 tonnes of foodgrains in the current season in Sylhet division under the countrywide drive that began on May 31.
Contacted, an official in the regional food office, Sylhet, informed this correspondent yesterday, of the total, 8912 tonnes are Boro paddy and the rest 5976 tonnes are boiled rice. The food officials will buy paddy from the farmers while rice will be supplied by the listed millers of 4 districts, he added. The procurement will continue till 31 August.
Of the total, highest 4266 tonnes of paddy will be procured from Sunamganj district while 867 tonnes of rice will also be collected. In Habiganj, 2151 tons of paddy and 2961 tonnes of rice will be procured while in Moulvibazar 1019 tonnes of paddy and 500 tonnes of rice will be procured. In Sylhet district, the target of paddy procurement has been set at 1476 tonnes and 1645 tonnes of boiled rice, the source added.
It is stateable here that, Boro paddy was cultivated on 46,1518 hectares in 4 districts in the division with a targeted production of 17,55,453 tonnes of rice in the just ended season, DAE sources informed.     iqbal1527@hotmail.com
