153 BGB mutineers jailed in Chittagong

CHITTAGONG, Apr 28 (UNB) : Some 153 jawans of BGB Training Centre and School at Baitul Izzat in Satkania Upazila were sentenced to different jail terms Thursday for their involvement in the 2009 mutiny. Of the convicts, 80 were given seven years imprisonment, six years and a half for four, six years for 13, five years and a half for 16, five years for 29, four years for five, three years for three, two years for two and one year and a half for one. The court also fined each of the convicts Tk 100. Jawans of the training centre staged mutiny following the BDR mutiny in BDR headquarters. Assistant Nayek Subedar Shariful Islam on July 7 last year filed a case with Satkania thana in this connection. On the 15th day of the trial today, the special court-16 set up at BGB Chittagong sector headquarters at Halishahar in the city, delivered the verdict at about 10:20am. While delivering the verdict under Article-10 of the BDR Act-1972, the court, headed by Colonel Bashirul Islam, cited 32 charges, which, among others, include disobeying the order of officers, creating panic through firing, looting, ransacking and attempt to kill the officers. Prosecutor of the case Lt Col Shamimur Rahman briefed journalists after the verdict.
