157 women, children trafficked to India in last three years

SATKHIRA, Feb 24 (UNB): Some local 157 women and children were trafficked to India through different points of 138 kms border here in last three years from 2007 to 2010.
After they were trafficked, 85 victims were later rescued. A total of 136 cases were filed in connection with the trafficking.
Of the cases, trial of nine cases was completed, but no accused was punished. Thirty four accused were acquitted.
At present, 70 cases are under trial and 23 cases under investigation.
This was disclosed at a workshop titled 'Safe migration and prevention of workers' smuggling' at DC's conference room Wednesday.
Jointly organised by BRAC Advocacy unit and local administration, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Chandra Biswas attended the function as chief guest.
A total of 80 participants from different professions took part in the workshop, which was chaired by BRAC Coordinator Aminul Islam.
