FE REPORT | Friday, 16 August 2024

The 15th August that marks the assassination of Bangladesh's independence leader Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed on Thursday.
On this day in 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members and relatives were killed by a group of disgruntled Army officers at his Dhanmondi residence at Road no. 32.
Hundreds of students and general people took position on roads near the Dhanmondi-32 house and they barred people from entering the area on suspicion of going there to pay their homage to Bangabandhu.
According to them, they took position in the area to prevent any untoward situation centering the 15th August.
Barricades and barbed wires were put at all the entry points of Road no. 32 and army patrolled the road.
About 10 people were learnt to have been caught by the students from the Dhanmondi Road area and handed over to the police.
On the other hand, the people of Tungipara in Gopalganj observed the day without Sheikh Hasina for the first time in 43 years as she is now staying in India after her resignation as prime minister following a mass uprising.
The general people and followers of Awami League (AL) gathered at Bangabandhu's grave in Tungipara to pay their respects.
