16 fugitive Jamaat, Shibir men surrender

CHITTAGONG, Mar 25 (UNB): Sixteen fugitive leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and its student wing Islami Chhatro Shibir, accused in two extortion cases, surrendered before a court here today (Tuesday).
Court sources said Jamaat Satkania Upazila secretary and Kanchona Union Parishad Chairman Mujaffar Ahmed, upazila organising secretary and Madarsra Union Parishad Chairman Faridul Alam and 14 others surrendered before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Al-Mamun at noon.
The court sent them to jail after rejecting their bail prayers.
Two local businessmen filed the separate extortion cases accusing 84 people, including former lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury, with Satkania police station on November last year.
Police submitted the charge sheets against 34 people on March 13 this year.
Of them, Shahjahan Chowdhury and three others were arrested earlier while 14 others were still on the run.
