16,833 tonnes of jute goods lying unsold

Our Correspondent KHULNA, Nov 27: About 16,833 tonnes of jute goods worth about Tk. 470 million (47 crore) have been laying unsold at Jessore Jute Industries (JJI) and Carpeting Jute Mill as the jute mills are facing financial crises. In this situation payment of the salary and wages to the staffs and employees of these mills has become uncertain from this month, source said. Source said that the situation has been created due to buyer countries have suspended purchase of the jute goods. Meanwhile, the JJI mill authority has given salary, wages and bonus to the staffs and employees for last month by taking loan or about Tk. 40 million from the BJMC. Source said that Bangladeshi jute goods are exported to Syria, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, India, United Kingdom and Australia. But the middle eastern countries have stopped import of jute goods from Bangladesh due to internal and international problems. AHM Nazmul Ahsan, Project Head of JJI said, "We are worried over the financial crisis and it was informed to the BJMC". Munshi Miraj Hossain, Project Head of Carpeting Jute Mill said that the problem is temporary and it will be solved soon. BCL activities suspended The activities of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL), student wing of ruling party Awami League, has been suspended in Government M M City College and Government Azam Khan Commerce College unit of the city following a clash between two rival groups. Source said that activists and leaders of the BCL became restive in Khulna over establishing supremacy in M M City College and Azam Khan Commerce College for last one week. VP candidate of City College SK Sadi was wounded by the rival group. He is admitted in Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. SK Hasif, younger brother of Sadi filed a case against eight leaders of the rival group. Considering overall situation high command of the party ordered to stop all activities of BCL units. President of BCL City unit Deb Dulal Bari said that the BCL activists of City and Commerce Colleges have been directed not to attend any activities of the party. Local leaders have called the central BCL leaders to control the situation.
