17 RU JCD leaders held

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Dec 8: Police arrested on Sunay night 17 leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Rajshahi University (RU) unit, including its president and general secretary, while holding a meeting at a local school in the Rajshahi city adjacent to RU campus.
The detained leaders include JCD RU unit president Imtiaz Ahmed, general secretary Quamrul Hasan, joint-general secretary Sultan Ahmed Rahi, Ziaur Rahman Hall president Papon Ahmed, Hahibur Rahman Hall president Imdad Hossain, Suhrawardy Hall secretary Sanim, Zoha Hall president
Jony Mian, Ameer Ali Hall secretary Nirmol, Shah Makhdum Hall president Saiful Khalid and Sher-e-Bangla Hall secretary Jafor Ahmed.
Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Matihar Police Station, said they detained the JCD men around 9:30pm Sunday while they were holding a clandestine meeting in a classroom at Mirzapur School and College to 'plan subversive acts.
Imtiaj Ahmed, JCD university unit president, claimed that they sat in a meeting to form different hall unit committees with prior permission of the college principal.
But some activists of RU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) led
by its vice president Mehedi Hasan encircled the JCD men while holding
the meeting.
The BCL men locked the meeting room from outside and beat some of the JCD men, Imtiaj said.
Later, police rushed in and arrested the JCD men along
with the BNP Ward-30 president Nazmul Haque.
On the other hand, JCD threatened an indefinite strike from Tuesday at RU, if their arrested leaders are not freed by Monday.
In a protested meeting in front of the Motihar police station Monday at
12.30 pm Asaduzzaman Olin, vice president of JCD RU unit, announced
the strike programme.
