At least 17 shanties of a slum in city's Mohakhali area were gutted by a fire Thursday. Property worth Tk 0.5 million were damaged by the fire, firemen said. The flame originated from an electric short circuit at a shanty of the slum located in front of the ICDDR,B Hospital at about 11:35am and soon engulfed the adjacent shanties where low-income people reside.
