18 BGB men sued for murder in Panchagarh

A case has been filed with a Panchagarh court against 18 BGB personnel in connection with the death of an elderly man in custody. Rezia Khatun, wife of victim Zahirul Islam, filed the case against 6 named members of Border Guard Bangladesh and 12 other unidentified ones with the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in the district town on Wednesday. The court ordered the officer-in-charge of Panchagarh Police Station to take legal action after investigation. The accused include commanding officer of BGB Battalion-18 Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Haque, JCO Nayek Subedar M Nurul Islam, Mistripara BOP commander Nayek Subedar M Dewlar Hossain, sepoys Kawser Ali, Sumon Kumar and Abdul Khaleque. According to the case statement, a BGB team stormed into the house of Zahirul in Mistripara on June 14 and beat him mercilessly after dragging him out of his house. Later, he was produced before a mobile court which sentenced him to 18 months' imprisonment. As he fell ill at jail, Zahirul was taken to Sadar Hospital where dosctors declared him dead on Monday, according to UNB.
